Our Vegan Xylitol Mint and Cranberry Flosses are not safe for your pet since they do contain xylitol which can be highly toxic to dogs and other animals. Our Natural Biodegradable Silk Floss does not contain xylitol and could be used for your pet, but please, we beg you, do not let them chew or eat the floss since that can harm your furbaby.

Since vegan means using or containing no animal products and silk comes from a silk worm, our Natural Biodegradable Silk Floss is not vegan. We wanted to be able to offer a completely biodegradable floss and, at the moment, silk is our only option. We didn't want to leave out our vegan friends so we do offer two vegan flosses that are made from nylon.

Our Natural Biodegradable Silk Floss is sourced in cooperation with the CORSEDA Farm Cooperative in Cauca, Colombia. The CORSEDA Cooperative is a family owned and operated initiative that focuses on redirecting worthy sources of livelihood back to the native populations of Colombia in a sustainable and enriching manner. Spun by hand, the silk we use is pure, natural silk thread that is a 100% biodegradable material and comes from silk worms. Silk is used to make clothes, floss and many other products throughout the world.  Silk thread is one of nature’s strongest natural fibers and the only natural fiber strong enough to be made into floss. In order to harvest in an efficient, effective, and safe manner, the silk cocoons are boiled to allow the whole cocoon to be unraveled as one continuous thread, permitting a much stronger thread and reducing the number of cocoons needed to make viable silk thread. The result is a 100% natural product that can biodegrade and causes no impact on the environment after use. We here at RADIUS believe this is a very important offering for our consumers and our environment. Our nylon comes from a petroleum derivative. Trust us, we would LOVE to have a different material which is not oil based, unfortunately we have not been able to find another material that has the properties needed for a flossing thread and that is not oil based.

Our Floss Sachet packs do contain less floss than our spools but as with most travel sized items (and any item), packaging is often more expensive than the product itself. The travel box, the biodegradable packaging and “single-serving”/”single-use” sizing all add up to make the product more expensive. However, when tested we found that people wasted less floss when using single-serving sizes as compared to using a spool of floss, subsequently reducing the total quantity needed to purchase.

As much as we try to be environmentally friendly as possible, there are certain things that we cannot change - like FDA laws for example. The reason all of our floss spools are packaged in an inner recyclable plastic container and then put in a cardboard package is because floss is considered a medical device by the FDA and they require it to be packaged in a plastic container when sold in traditional retailers such as grocery/drug. Since we sell in both natural stores and traditional stores we must abide by this law. We are always looking for new, innovative, green ideas for packaging and are actively looking for alternatives including separate packaging for natural retailers. One alternative that we offer is our Floss Sachets. It’s the exact same floss as our spooled floss except it’s packaged in single-use travel size quantities. Each sachet has enough floss for one use and you can purchase them in packs of 20. These are packaged in biodegradable paper. The reason we can sell this floss in a non-plastic container is because the paper sachets are air-tight and that’s an acceptable alternative for the FDA (we are also looking at this idea for our spools). 

We encourage all of our customers to please recycle the inner #5 plastic container.
