Iedereen in Amerika heeft perfecte tanden. Die glimmende witte, super rechte glimlach die je in de films ziet. Of hier op Alex, die de beste heeftglimlach!Ik had vermoed dat dit waar was door te kijkenJulia Roberts films in de jaren 90, maar al mijn angsten werden bevestigd toen ik voor het eerst drie jaar geleden arriveerde. De perfecte glimlach was overal - op immigratieambtenaren op het vliegveld, moeders die kinderwagens rijden, restaurant obers. Iedereen. Het waren niet alleen de filmsterren.
Ik denk dat je het verschil tussen een Amerikaan en een nieuwkomer, zoals ik, kunt zien in deze dappere nieuwe, glimmende wereld door een glimlach. Zie je, in Australië, zoals in Europa, is het niet zo belangrijk om perfecte tanden te hebben. Zo ver weg van Hollywood zijn we er behoorlijk laissez-faire over. Borstelen, flossen ... zeker! (Het zijn niet de jaren 1600!) Maar niet iedereen is geobsedeerd door tanden bleken en rechttrekken. Als het gaat om schoonheid, zijn er andere troeven waar Australiërs meer om geven.
Hier voelt het echter alsof een mega-watt-glimlach voorop staat. Een must. Kortom, je kunt het beter hebben of je bent buiten. En dat doe ik niet - mijn scheve tand die, toen ik opgroeide, me een beetje karakter voelde toevoegen, plotseling voelt als een verraad aan dit land van mooie tanden.
Net als op de middelbare school, toen ik landde, werd ik plotseling weer zelfbewust - zelfs mijn glimlach is veranderd.
Ik heb de "lichte tand-toon" glimlach geperfectioneerd (herinnering aan alles dat ik tenminste tanden heb, haha) en de "gesloten lip" glimlach, waarvan ik denk dat die er een beetje bitchy kan uitzien, zelfs als ik dat echt (beloof ) ben blij!!
Ik omarmdetanden bleken (de Crest-strips werken echt) en, meer recent, hebben erover nagedacht om eindelijk de perfect-smile-status te bereiken, mezelf in de Amerikaanse samenleving te integreren ... Door beugels te krijgen. Ja, beugels voor volwassenen à la Tom Cruise.
Ik weet het, ik weet het, ik weet het !! Ik voel me een beetje gek om er zelfs maar aan te denken. Maar misschien is het beter laat dan nooit, toch?
Toen ik mijn vriend, Drew, vertelde dat ik aan beugels dacht, was zijn antwoord: "Maar ik hou van je snaggletooth." (Met een grote, rechte tanden, volledig Amerikaanse glimlach, natuurlijk.) Ok, op dat moment wist dat ik gek was. (Wie gaat uit met een man die van hun "snaggletooth" houdt ?!)
Ik was nu vastbesloten om een beugel te krijgen. (Hasta la vista, snaggletooth! Hallo perfecte tanden!) Wat maakt het uit als ik meer dan tien jaar te laat ben voor het feest?
Maar toen besloot ik er eerst een professional, mijn tandarts, naar te vragen. Hij gaf me deze opties:
1.Ontvang metalen beugels voor ongeveer 18 maanden die hij beschreef, "zal behoorlijk merkbaar zijn." (Een beeld van Gwen Stefani tijdens haar beugel periode kwam te binnen.)
2.Probeer Invisalign, de 'onzichtbare beugels' die meer op een doorzichtige bedekking lijken die tanden corrigeert - maar het zou DRIE jaar duren om EEN tand recht te maken.
3. Omarm mijn "snaggletooth" (en zie af van elke droom van een glimlach van Julia Roberts).
Dat was zes maanden geleden en nu komt mijn volgende afspraak bij de tandarts - en ik ben nog steeds onbeslist. Voor iemand die opgroeide met glimlachen en niet om die ene kromme tand gaf, voelt het als een grote verplichting. Maar in deze nieuwe wereld van perfecte tanden voelt het alsof het de juiste zet is. Is er tenslotte iets mooiers dan een grote glimlach?
Is het zo belangrijk om de perfecte tanden te hebben? Of is het gek om toe te geven aan de druk vanperfectie?
